| Rough
and Tumble's main lodge epitomises 'rustic
elegance,' with its exposed beams, cathedral
ceilings and handcrafted stone fireplace.
Designed to celebrate the site, the huge deck
and wall of windows overlooks a bend in the
mighty Mokihinui River. On a rainy West Coast
day, one can while away hours in front of
the fire, watching the river's moods change.
Above the fireplace is
a mural of the river's catchment, by local
artist Gaylene Swann. We've continued the
map theme throughout the building, with
historic maps of the area framed in old
river-run red beech. We have an extensive
library of books and magazines, many with
local and natural history themes, for guests'
enjoyment.
The dining and meeting
area has been created to cater to up to
20 people comfortably. Our massive red beech
dining tables were milled and made on-site.
The drinks bar sets you up with tea and
coffee all day, and a bar fridge keeps those
other important beverages cold.
Up the ship's ladder,
loft spaces provide a bird's eye view of
the river and a cozy place to snuggle in,
play chess, or check your e-mail.
We're on the West
Coast and our guests are often out on adventures
all day - yes, we do have a laundry and
drying room! It's a key piece of infrastructure
for all outdoor types.
