Whether you’re coming off the highway from Nelson or The Old Ghost Road from Stern Valley, your river’s edge oasis is waiting. Like everything else at Rough and Tumble, our licensed cafe is a one-of-a-kind affair that we’ve handcrafted around our edge-of-wilderness setting. Here’s how it works:

Our café is open to the public as well as lodge guests from 10:30am – 5:30pm. (During our low season, May to October, the café is open when we have guests in-house or anticipate a lot of folks coming on or off the track). Favorites include homemade pizzas, slow cooked pulled pork sandwiches, nachos, and home made chili-chocolate brownies. Then there’s our selection of West Coast Brewery craft beers, wines, and the best gin and tonics on the Coast!

As evening rolls around, it’s all about you. When 3 or more rooms are in house, we offer a bountiful two-course dinner served at 7:00pm. At check in we’ll give you all the details and you can put your name in the pot. It’s a gala affair for sure. On quieter evenings, we simply extend our café hours to 7:30pm for you, providing a more casual scene

Also upon check in, we’ll ask if you’d like to sign up for 8:30am cooked breakfast. Continental breakfast is included in your room tariff and can be taken at your leisure. If you require continental breakfast before 8:00am be sure to let us know and we’ll set everything out before we close up for the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can we bring our own food and use your kitchen? No; our kitchen/bar area is not available for guest use.

Can we dine on our own meals in the lodge? Sorry, no. We're happy to direct you to picnicking spots nearby.

Can we BYOB? No; our liquor license does not allow that.

Are there other dining options nearby? Absolutely! The Seddonville Pub is 4km back down the road. Miners on Sea is in Granity. Drifters - in Granity - is sometimes open in the evenings, and the Cow Shed Café at Gentle Annie is open seasonally.

Our group wants to self-cater. Is that an option? While we used to offer self-catering in the winter months this is generally now not compatible with our fully licensed café operations. We recognise that on special occasions (e.g. weddings) groups may prefer exclusive use of the lodge and the option of their own catering; we are always happy to discuss ideas you - please email us at info@roughandtumble.co.nz.
