We're fortunate to have several excellent guides and operators in the area to work with to make your experience at Rough and Tumble deep and unforgettable. We are happy to assist with advice and bookings. We recommend:

Rafting the Mokihinui River with EcoRafting

Rafting the Mokihinui

The Mokihinui is an excellent Grade 3-4 rafting experience. Our guests are in a unique situation to enjoy a full day on the river; after breakfast, your helicopter collects you for a scenic flight to the Mokihinui Forks, then Josh and crew from EcoRafting take you on a 6-8 hour adventure down a 16km wilderness gorge, ending up directly at the lodge for a hot shower and cold beverage! There's no other place in the South Island as beautifully situated for more rafting and less logistical hassle than Rough and Tumble. We love this trip because it's accessible to most abilities and has a great mix of exciting rapids and calm stretches during which you can relax and enjoy this remarkable environment. Check out our high adventure rafting packages.

Guided Fishing & Hunting

Above the Mokihinui Forks, the river is regarded as "first class fishing water in a pristine wilderness environment." Easily accessible by helicopter -- or a good seven hour tramp in -- the North and South branches of the Mokihinui will provide days of satisfying fishing. The lower reaches hold good numbers of fish, including sea-run brown trout. Trout can be fished for year-round right outside the lodge (the fish pictured here was caught at the lodge, December 2006).

Rough and Tumble is a great spot for fishing parties; there's nothing quite like swapping stories over a cold one by the roaring open fire!

Helicopter Charters

Whether it's fishing, rafting, hunting or hiking, Wayne Pratt from Helicopter Charter Karamea will meet you 100m from our front door! Wayne and Julie have an excellent family-run operation, with more than 25 years experience, primarily on the West Coast and Fiordland.

They are Heaphy Track specialists, and frequently transport our guests all over Kahurangi National Park and the northwestern corner of the South Island. Their Robinson R44 is the fastest and most exciting way to access our spectacular mountains, rivers and coastline.

Oparara Arches

Located near Karamea, 45 minutes north of us, the Oparara Basin is a unique combination of natural landforms, diverse ecosystems and spectacular caves and arches born of a million years of undisturbed isolation.

Public access to the 'Honeycomb Hill Specially Protected Area' is restricted to DOC (Department of Conservation) approved guided tours only, due to the delicate ecological nature of the area. Oparara Guided Tours will take you into 400 million year old limestone cave systems, with delicate formations and bones of many extinct birds, including the giant moa. Full and half day tours are available, with options including kayaking and bushwalks.
